Mama: Heading into our 20th year of homeschooling, and newly diagnosed with lymphoma, I looked at another year and hollered, "Time out!!" Our family is taking one year of "unschooling" and my own focus (beyond facilitating the learning projects of my children) is blooming in the kitchen - adding some joy and creativity to the mundane. Cancer will do that to you. I have a ginormous cookbook collection and it is time to explore that culinary playground and become a better cook along the way.
Sophia: Sophia graduated from home school and also received an AA degree in June 2012. She'll be not only cooking dinner for us on Tuesdays & Thursdays, but also will be exploring other food projects (keep watch for her summer ice cream project!). She is an accomplished gluten-free cook but has restricted farther and is looking toward learning to cook grain-free as well.
Gareth: Gareth bakes. He is 13 and does a couple of artisanal boules most days. He has done a couple of batches of cinnamon rolls, but he's hoping to branch out this year into other breads.
Araminta & Lucinda: These sweet little girls, 10 and 12, have an immune disorder that causes them to have a severely limited diet. They do most of their own cooking. When they were told about the year of unschooling, one of their first requests was to learn to bake cupcakes for the family - they were thrilled at the suggestion to do a classic cook-through of the book "Cupcakes: Luscious Bakeshop Favorites from Your Home Kitchen". The three of us won't be able to eat our creations, but we're looking forward to the fun of creating them!
The Patriarch: Jamaican guys cook, or at least all of the Jamaican guys I've met. What can I say - he's really good with fish in particular, but he is enjoying expanding outward his fish repertoire during this season of food exploration. He had a nightmare encounter with kidney stones that ended up with him having two separate surgeries and lots of complications from the first, so he has changed to a Paleo diet and is learning new kitchen skills with that, as well.
